  • The Esplanade Yonge to the Novotel (east of Scott).
  • Lower Scott Street will also be closed traffic.
  • No pedestrian access to Yonge Street when
    the Backstage crane is being taken down.

    permit as of May 19.

Update on Esplanade vehicular closure November 11

Please note that The Esplanade will remain closed to vehicular traffic until the road is resurfaced to make it safe to drive on. Pedestrian access is being maintained both on the south side of the street beside the Backstage condominium construction site, as well as access on the north side to the L Tower. Every effort is being made to get the road resurfaced ASAP and re-opened to eastbound car traffic.

Please note that due to the unexpected condition of the road bed, vehicular traffic between Yonge Street and Scott Street will remain closed overnight. Updates will be provided on November 11.

L Tower Hoist Removal Rescheduled to August

L Tower Hoist Removal Rescheduled to August 9 & 10, 2014

The L Tower Hoist (external elevator) was to be removed this month, July, 2014, over a full weekend. Due to complications with some elements of construction staging, the hoist removal has been postponed to early August. Most likely the weekend of August 9 and 10. Updates will be provided to confirm the dates and timing of this work.

What is going to happen?

The hoist (external elevator) will be taken down in stages using the Large Tower Crane to street level. 

The Road Closure of The Esplanade between Yonge Street and Scott Street will be in effect from 12:01 am Saturday through Midnight on Sunday, to permit the safe lowering of each hoist section. 

Pedestrian access will be maintained except when sections of the hoist are being lowered by the crane.

Traffic control staff will be on hand as well as two (2) Paid Duty Officers of the Toronto Police Service

The road closure permit will be posted on site. Reminder notices will be delivered to the two neighbouring condominiums. Reminder email and social media notices will be posted prior to the weekend and any updates will also posted on this website.

The L Tower Hoist Removal (external elevator pictured in the photo below) had been rescheduled to this weekend July 26 – July 27, 2014. It will now be removed in early August – please click here for more details.

The Esplanade reopens to vehicles btwn Yonge & Scott

Yesterday’s closure of the eastbound vehicle lane on The Esplanade between Yonge & Scott Street will end this afternoon with the reopening of the vehicle lane. Pedestrian access has been maintained throughout the day. 

The Backstage & L Tower Parking construction schedule for July 8 – 12 was unaffected by the storm and remains on track. Please click here to view it.

Please note that due to a water-main break earlier today on Front Street, east of Scott Street there are two temporary road closures:

  1. Front Street is closed from Scott Street to Church Street.
  2. Toronto Police Services and the City of Toronto Works Department have also asked for The Esplanade to be closed from Younge Street to Scott Street to minimize traffic in the area.

There is no information on the duration of this closure at this time. Once we have more information we will post it here.

Please note that due ice falling from the L Tower the construction management team for L Tower and Backstage has closed The Esplanade — between Scott Street and Yonge Street — to pedestrians and vehicles in the interests of public safety. 

We apologize for the inconvenience but safety must come first.

Backstage Construction Schedule – November 26 – 30

We have been advised that City of Toronto’s subcontractor — OJCR Construction — will begin sanitary sewer and water-main work on The Esplanade on  Wednesday, November 28. We have been advised that:

  1. Pedestrian traffic will remain open. 
  2. Eastbound Vehicular Traffic will be closed from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm

Thursday, November 29 – WORK CANCELLED 

  • CANCELLED A large backhoe (a “long reach”) will be delivered under police escort to the site at midday. There will be temporary disruptions to traffic on Front Street East, Scott Street and The Esplanade.

Daytime Vehicular Road Closure

  • A daytime vehicular road closure will be maintained Saturday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm to permit repaving the new vehicle lane.

  • No work work is currently scheduled for the Backstage and L Tower Parking Site this week.

The new pedestrian route through the site will provide 2.11 metres or approximately 7 feet of pedestrian space fenced on the south side and protected from vehicular traffic on the north side by concrete jersey barriers. 

The new eastbound vehicle lane is 3.3. metres or 10 feet 10 inches wide.

UPDATE on water-main and sanitary sewer work: 

City of Toronto subcontractor OJCR Construction will be visiting the site this week to review how they will work with the new roadway alignment. It is expected that OJCR will be submitting an application for a road closure permit next week to enable them to so the sanitary sewer and water-main connection work for the Backstage site. The start date for their work is not yet know. While OJCR is working a safe pedestrian route will be maintained. Vehicular traffic will be re-routed via Yonge and Front to Scott Street. 

 NOTES: 

Construction activities are dependent on whether.
