Our Final Post and Thank You

This is our final update posting after almost seven years of construction updates for the L Tower and Backstage. We have sought to provide accurate and timely information for the local neighbourhood. We thank you all for your patience and forbearance; and for your engagement and interest in both the Backstage and L Tower projects.

When recently asked by a trade journal, what he thought about the L Tower and Backstage results, Alfredo Romano, President of Castlepoint Numa, paid tribute to the late Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell and the neighbourhood stakeholders. ”You never really know how a project will turn out, despite the best of intention, until it’s actually done. In this case the results are enormously satisfying and much of the credit has to go to Pam and the stakeholder leadership. In addition to design excellence, Pam passionately insisted on critical improvements to the public realm that include the Sony Plaza, the future PATH and the signalized intersection at The Esplanade & Yonge Street. With the keen involvement of the neighbourhood and City staff, countless consultations were held and the final results are much better for it. The Cityzen-Castlepoint-Fernbrook partnership is very proud of this important piece of city building. Yes, from conception to completion, it’s actually better than I ever thought it would be.”

As we enter the final month the first quarter of 2018, we see that vision realized, as exterior work is now complete at the Backstage Condominiums. The concrete and granite pavers that form the new sidewalk along the south side of The Esplanade have been completed. Sidewalk trees have been planted. The variety of winter weather did slow progress on the sidewalk work, and there is some minor finishing work remaining that will be soon be completed.

As we reported in December, the outdoor amenity space has been completed following a design by Claude Cormier and Associates, the same team who designed the Sony Centre’s northwest plaza, the new Berczy Park and Sugar Beach among many other projects. The outdoor amenity area features landscaping, grass lawns and a lap pool. Not only does it provide a first class amenity for the residents of Backstage, it also presents a pleasant vista for those neighbours who overlook it.

We look forward to the opening of the Public Exhibit Space and the future PATH at Backstage, later in 2018. We hope all of you can experience those spaces in the coming months and years as we look forward to a variety of programming and activities.

On behalf of the development partners Castlepoint Numa, Cityzen, and Fernbrook Homes please accept our thanks for following along with us on this journey.
